Maha Kumbabhishegam of Kunniyur Sri Kamakshi Amman-A Grand Success!

The Maha Kumabhishegam performed on 29-01-2012 of Sri Kunniyur Kamakshi Amman Temple in the small village of Kunniyur in Thiruvarur District of Thanjavur was a Grand Success.

On the day of the Maha Kumbabhishegam, the village of Kunniyur had a festive look .....with the cool winter breeze in the air, it was a treat to ones eyes to see this magnificient Temple, stand in all its glory!

The Maha Kumbhabishegam celebrations of the Sri Kunniyur Kamakshi Amman  temple  are over and serenity prevails. Reverberating sounds of the nadaswaram and thavil and the melodious Vedic chanting of the priests, resplendent in their red and orange silk dhotis and angavasthrams, which echoed in the neighbourhood has quietened.  So has the chattering of the eager devotees, who dotted the streets to partake of the Maha Prasadam and Anna Danam which took place on the holy day of the consecration.  There was joy in the air on all the days of the holy event which began on January 27,th , 2012 and ended in a crescendo on January 29, 2012.
The palpable excitement that filled the atmosphere for these three  days when tens of thousands of devotees from across the villages of Thanjavur area and other states converged at the temple has all but simmered down.
Good show by the K.B.S.S. Committee Members in making this Holy, sacred event a grand success!

Sri Kamakshi Amman-Kunniyur

Marking the auspicious start of the above event, the  preliminary auspicious ceremony of 'பந்தக்கால் முகூர்த்தம்' was performed on Thursday, Jan.19, 2012, at the Yaagasala site by the Chief Priest சர்வ சாதகம் தகட்டூர் ஸ்ரீ ஞானசேகர சிவாச்சார்யார் with 'sankalpam' by the President Shri K.S.Shivasubramanian and family on behalf of the Thiruppani Committee. There was a huge crowd from the start of the ceremony to the end of the two day function in Kunniyur temple premises.

The historic Maha Kumbabhishegam of the magnificent Temple of Sri Kamakshi Amman in Kunniyur village of Tiruvarur District in Thanjavur, was performed on 29th January, 2012 in the benign presence of the K.B.S.S. Committee Members, together with the immediate Blessings and Anugrahams from the Kanchi Kamakoti Peedathipadi Sri Sankarachariar, the Maha Kumbabhishegams was performed on 29th January, 2012.

This is the most memorable event one can expect to witness in the history of this small village called Kunniyur in Thiruvarur District of Thanjavur.  Surrounded by paddy fields, ponds of lotus, flowers and groves of coconut palms, the serene atmosphere of this beautiful village was a heavenly feeling for one and all gathered for the Holy Consecration.

View of the Temple after Renovation

As per mandates of Agama Sastras, Kumbabhishegam for all temples has to be performed once in 12 years to preserve and maintain the sanctity of the temples. As the temple needed certain essential repairs and renovation with regard to the Raja Gopuram, Utsava Mandapam and the  Vimanam, the K.B.S.S. Committee Members together with the Gramavasis, proposed to undertake them and perform the Jeernodharana Ashtabandhana Swarnabandhana Maha Kumbabhishegam on Sunday, the 29th January 2012.

His Holiness Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamiji and His Holiness Sri Sankara Vijayendra Swaraswati Swamiji, Jagadguru Sankaracharyas of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham have bestowed their blessings on this Project and with their Blessings, will guide us through the rituals, as in the past.

Rituals being performed before Kumbabhishegam
Kumbabhishegam, as was done in the previous occasion, was performed in the most traditional style with all religious rites. Many Sivacharyas from Tamil Nadu and about 25 Pandits from all parts of Thanjavur /Tamil Nadu, were present for this holy rituals and  performed the Yaga Poojas from 27th January, 2012 in the specially erected Uthama Paksha Yagashala. Sivacharyas from renowned temples and other places from Tamil Nadu performed Yaga Poojas for Lord Vinayaka, other Gods and Goddess and the Navagrahas. Similarly eminent Pandits who had gathered from famous temples of Tamil Nadu, performed Kalasa Poojas for the other Deities of the Temple.
THE LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY :
According to our ancient scriptures, performing Kumbabhishegam and participating in the Jeernodharanam of a temple is equivalent ot performing 100 Ashwameda Yagas. Some of us are fortunate in witnessing the growth of this unique temple in Kunniyur village,  right from the 'Bhoomipooja'[Pancha Silanyasam] and participated in the earlier Kumbabhishegam and those very few, were indeed blessed with another opportunity to witness this Kumbabhishegam too. Those who were not present on earlier occasions would have definitely had the unique opportunity now to have witnessed this rare occasion,  to be part of this previleged few and had the opportunity to participate in this function. All the Bakthas from far and near were cordially invited and the Invitations for the Maha Kumbabhishegam was sent to one and all to participate in allof the sacred ceremonies and be the recipients of Sri Kamakshi Amman's Blessings.
Sri Kamakshi Amman in all Her Glory!
The Swayambu vigraham was originally known by the name Seethala Parameshwari but later came to be hailed as Sri Kamakshi.

Kunniyur Bakthargal Sath Sangam [K.B.S.S.], a registered Society managing the administration of this temple, among the others in the village, under took the renovation work in Febuary last, which includes a new Vimanam, Maha Mantapam and a three-tier Raja Gopuram.  The Sangam , seeking contributions from devotees far and near, to complete the remaining work before this Kumbabhishegam, which included renovation of the Garbagriham and Artha Mandapam /Electrical work, have done the renovation work , with utmost care and concentration, with the donations received in plenty from our devotees.

The generous contributions received by the Committee, towards the expenses of Renovaiton of Raja Gopuram, Repairs & Painting of Uthsava Mandapam and other places in the Temple Complex, Vasthram for all Deities, Vedik Pundits, erection of Uthama Paksha Yagashala and host of other such items will go a long way in helping the Sangam to successfully conduct all the divine functions in the near future.

Needless to say, the K.B.S.S. Committee together with the Gramavasies, definitely needs a "Pat in the Back" for the excellent efforts taken towards conducting of this Kumbabhishegam.  I should mention here that the accommodation/travel arrangements and other facilities extended to the people who had come from far and near, was very satisfying and had no regrets what-so-ever!

The K.B.S.S. Committee extends its hearty thanks to each and every one of the devotees who contributed their mite which made it possible to achieve today's 95% work of this stupendous project which promises to be a landmark in the area with the presiding Deity taking Her permanent Peetam in the Sannidhi on the Maha Kumbabhishegam day and thereafter. to Bless all the devotees with Her unfailing Grace.

Mandalabhishekam begins from 30-01-2012 and will be conducted for the next 48 days i.e. up to 17-03-2012.

Parassinikkadavu Sree Muthappan Temple in Kannur, Kerala

Parassinikkadavu Sree Muthappan Temple is a famous centre of worship in Kannur district of Kerala.  Sree Muthappan is considered to be a manifestation of Shiva and Vishnu

Located at Parassinikkadavu, about 20 km away from Kannur, this temple is unique for its worship styles and rituals. Unlike other temples here the offerings to the deity include toddy [an extract from coconut trees], fish and meat.

As a ritual Theyyam is performed on all days in the temple.Theyyam is a ritualistic art form popular in Malabar, the region comprising northern districts of Kerala.

There are several versions of the story of origin of the temple. However the central character in all these stories is a boy with divine powers who came to the place from nowhere and disappeared mysteriously. Villagers who felt the presence of Lord Shiva erected a temple to mark his presence.

Situated on the banks of Valapattanam river, the temple attracts devotees from all over Kerala irrespective of their caste and faith.

Here is a virtual tour of the temple which is breath-taking...

http://www.p4panorama.com/panos/muthappan/index.html

The famous Muthappan [Siva] Temple [Parassinikadavu Madappura] is on the banks of the Valapatanam river.

Muthappan is believed to be the personification of two divine figures — Thiruvappana and Vellatom. The dual divine figures Thiruvappana and Vellatom are similar to those of the Theyyamkaliyattem of the northern Malabar region. Though Sree Muthappan is worshiped as a single deity, it actually represents an integrated or unified form of two gods: Vishnu [with a fish-shaped crown] and Shiva [with a crescent-shaped crown].

Sri Muthappan's Theyyams are performed year-round whereas other Theyyams are seasonal [lasting October to May]

According to tradition, the main abode of Muthappan was Puralimala near Mattannur. The story goes that Muthappan appeared in the form of a child before one Padikutti Amma. The child had an insatiable appetite for liquor, fish and meat and became a nuisance to the family was therefore turned out from the house.

Armed with a bow and arrow Muthappan wandered from place to place and eventually reached Puralimala.  At Kunnathurpadi, on his way to Puralimala, he climbed on to the top of a palmyra tree near the house of one Chandan and drank toddy.

Chandan who happened to arrive on the scene, is said to have been turned into a rock at the gaze of Muthappan. Here Muthappan completely disappeared from the scene and nothing more was heard of completely disappeared from the scene and nothing more was heard of him.  It is believed that he came down to Parassinikadavu.

According to tradition, a member of the Vannan community at Parassinikadavu found a metallic arrow on the trunk of a Kangira tree and having felt something divine about the place, reported the matter to the senior member of an ancient Thiyya family in the neighbourhood. The latter, who felt the divine presence of Muthappan, immediately performed the necessary ceremonies and offered worship to him.

Sree Muthappan is always accompanied by a dog. Dogs are considered sacred here and one can see dogs in large numbers in and around the temple.

One can see two carved bronze dogs at the entrance of the temple that are believed to symbolize the bodyguards of the God. When the Prasad is ready it is first served to a dog that is always ready inside the temple complex.

Local legends enhance the importance of dogs to Sree Muthappan, such as the story that follows:

A few years ago, temple authorities decided to reduce the number of dogs inside the temple; so they took some dogs and puppies away. From that very day, the performer of the Sree Muthappan Theyyam was unable to perform; it is said that the spirit of Sree Muthappan enters the performer's body for the duration of the ceremony. But He probably refused to enter the Theyyam performer's body because the dogs had been removed. Realizing their mistake, the dogs were brought back to the temple by the temple authorities. From that day onwards, Theyyam performances returned to normal.

It is an accepted dictum here, that whatever is received by way of gifts or offerings should be spent for the  benefits of the pilgrims. The daily offerings made to Muthappan are also different from what they are in other temples.  It has been customary to offer toddy, fish and meat as 'nivedyams' to this deity.

People of all castes and communities including members of the Muslim as well as Christian communities are known to donate sums of money as vazhipadu of Muthappam. The annual festival which falls on December 1st, provides a special occasion for pilgrims to throng the Parassinikadavu temple.

The temple is situated 20 kms, north of Kannur town.

Getting there:

Nearest Railway Station: Kannur, about 20 km away.
Nearest Airport: Mangalore, about 120 km from Kannur town; Karipur International Airport at Kozhikode, which is 93 km from Kannur town

[Pradosham]

Temple in Konerirajapuram - [Kumbakonam] - The Lord Who Cures.

This Posting of mine is in response to a person who has read my earlier Posting on " Temples at Par with Kasi" and written his comments -dated 18th of December,2011, [ he has not furnished his name nor his email id].  I was very much moved by what he had written.  Hence this Posting of mine.

His comments I give below for the viewers:

[".....Namaskarams to all who are reading this blog. My brother-in-law, 43 years (sister's husband), is diagnosed with cancer last year and he is going through hell. The trauma that his little daughter and his wife is going through cannot be expressed in words. We are doing prayers and holding His feet to make our brother-in-law to come out of this disaster. Can anyone let me know if there is any specific temple worship, pooja which can bring down his pain and our mental sufferings..."]

I would like to enlighten him on two of the Temples which I am sure will give his family some sort relief and free him from the mental agony he is going through at the moment. My Prayers are with his family for a peaceful life ahead in the coming years.

The two Temples for CURE are listed below.  I will cover both the Temples for your interest.
  •  A Temple in Koneri Rajapuram.- Kumbakonam] - The Lord Who Cures.   Lord Vaidyanatha Swamy.
  • Shree Areyuru Vaidyanatheshwara Swamy in Areyuru, Tumkur Taluk /District, Karnataka State, India.

Now let us move on to the Temple in Koneri Rajapuram as mentioned above...

The colossal Nataraja at Konerirajapuram

About the temple

The Shiva temple at Konerirajapuram is located 8 Kms from Aduturai railway station which is on the Mayiladudurai - Kumbakonam section of the Southern Railway.

The main God in the temple being UmaMaheswaran in the form of lingam. The temple priest said that the Garbagraham has four pillars resembling four vedas. The main God in Lingam form is too big and beautiful with lots of Rudraksha beads decorating him. The temple is calm , quiet and has good ambience. The back side of the garbhagraham in the temple is in the shape of elephant's back , which distinguishes it to be build by a Chola King. The temple's garden has rare spiecies of Vilvam tree in it.

The temple has the largest metal cast Nataraja in the world, bigger than the one at Chidambaram which is of size: 8.5'x5.5'.
Temple's History :

The Chola king Kadaraditya Cholan and his wife Sembian Mahadevi were pious and asked the Sthapathi* to make a Lord Nataraja's statue in five metals or pancha loha which is tall and appealing . The Sthapathi was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and was very happy with the King’s order.
The Sthapathi is a person who works on art of making icons, with the required quantity of metal, i.e. copper brass & lead in the ratio of 82%, 15%, & 3% respectively is collected in a crucible and heated to get converted into liquid form. Simultaneously the karu (mould) is also heated. The mould becomes red hot. It is then buried in the ground up to the mouth of the mould, to get firm upright position. The hot liquid metal is poured into it. The mould is allowed to cool gradually. Then the wire bindings and iron rods are removed. The mould is broken open. Now rough metal image is obtained. Then it is chiseled, filed, and engraved to get fine ornamental statue.

The Sthapathi after receiving the order, works hard and presents the statue moulded to the king. The Kandaraditya Chola king isn't happy and asks him to make a Nataraj statue which is more alive, tall and appealing. The Sthapathi shows three casts of Nataraja which came upto 3 feet height but the King rejected them and gave him last chance to make it and ordered to chop his head if Sthapathi fails.

Picture of the Three Statues made by the Sthapathi:

He set to work , but since the  three casts of Nataraja were rejected by the King, He gave an ultimatum to the sculptor .Not delivering goods before the stipulated time would see him out of the Chozha Desa or  have his head  chopped. . The Sculptor was very depressed. He set to work. He had just a day more to present his work and he was still at work. He had a pot full of molten metal and was wondering whether to start the casting .He was praying to the Lord to make his creation   appealing to the King. An old man and his wife came near him and asked for some water to quench their thirst. The Sculptor in no mood for hospitality, told the Old Couple “ There’s no water. If you want, drink this molten metal” and was stunned and horrified to see the Old Man taking the pot and drinking the contents and giving a little to His wife too. Slowly, in their place there emerged two Vigrahams, one of a majestic, large Nataraja and by His side a very beautiful Sivakami.

The King walked in at that time and was extremely happy to see the icons. The Sculptor was shivering with devotion at the Lord’s magnanimity and related the episode and denied having made the Vigrahams. The King was furious and called his tale a lie and raised his sword , which struck the lifted right foot of the Deity. Blood spurted out and  splashed  on the King who developed leprosy. The Lord then appeared to all present there as Vrishabharoodar and told the King “   I am here in the form of Lingam as Vaidyanatha . Offer prayers to me and perform abhisheka and you will be cured.” He did. And he was cured. All the devotees who have utmost faith in this Lord, are believed to be cured off their disease.

When the doors of the sannidhi is thrown open to the devotees gathered at the temple, where the idol of Lord Nataraja is installed, you are taken aback in astonishment and there are no words to describe the feeling ....what they felt. He stands there, so realistic. His arms, feet, fingers, lips, eyes and every part of the body is said to be breathing life!!  There is a mole under the left arm. The nerves and muscles are visible. The priest says there are tiny hairs which drop during the abhishekam on Thiruvathirai . The scar on the right foot where the king’s sword struck is visible. And the smile…is divine ... capturing your soul. And the Goddess standing beside Him is exquisitely beautiful.

The priest lets you go inside and see the Lord Vaidyanaathaswamy and also some other icons made by the sculptor even till this day.

It is said that many diseases, even cancer is cured by this Lord. There are devotees from far off places like Canada, who have been cured of terminal cancer, by performing Abhishekam or special poojas here.

Added Information :

The temple occassionaly does Sama Veda pooja. The temple also does a grand rudra homam which might cost a bit,  but definitely worth it...The said Homam is believed to help us get rid of all our sins.

Sri Umamaheswar temple, Konerirajapuram.

A view of the Angavalanayagi (Dehasundari) Samedha Umamaheswaran
temple in Konerirajapuram,

I am sure after getting to know of this beautiful temple, people who needs to reach out this Divine Lord may do so. One should have complete faith in Him. The Priest in the temple is a very involved person and does all the Poojas with great devotion. It is a very beautiful temple with many sannidhis and has a rich history behind.

There is also a Perumal Temple in the Agraharam with a Sannidhi for Shree Rama. The Perumal is known as the Koneri Raja.

HAVE FAITH......EXPERIENCE THE IMPOSSIBLE AT THIS TEMPLE.

HAVE BELIEF ......and you will find the right path for your CURE..!!
