Tantra Temples in India - Kalighat Temple, Kolkata, India

The Kalighat Temple in its present form is only about 200 years old, although it has been referred to in Mansar Bhasan composed in the 15th century, and in Kavi Kankan Chandi of the 17th century.

Only two types of coins of Chandragupta II, who incorporated Vanga in the Gupta Empire, are known from Bengal. His Archer type coins, which became the most popular type of coinage with the Gupta rulers after Kumaragupta I, have been found in Kalighat. This is evidence of the antiquity of the place.

The original temple was a small hut. A small temple was constructed by King Manasingha in the early Sixteenth century. The present temple was erected under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family of Banisha. It was completed in 1809. The Haldar family claims to be the original owners of the temple property. But this was disputed by the Chowdhrys of Banisha. In the nineteen sixties a committee was formed for the administrative management of the temple with representation from the Government and the Haldar family.
It is necessary to know the history of the temple to understand the practices which are prevalent today.

Kalighat, in Calcutta [Kolkata], is an important pilgrimage for tantriks. Goddess Kali is regarded as one of the principal deities of Bengal. She is worshipped as the destroyer or liberator and is depicted in a fearful form. Despite Her terrifying form, She is venerated the world over by devotees as Maa or the Supreme Mother.

The Kalighat temple in Kolkata is regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas [sanctuaries] of India, where the various parts of Sati's body are said to have fallen in the course of Shiva's Rudra Tandava. Kalighat represents the site where the toes of the right foot of Shakti or Sati fell, as described in Pithamala.

Though no one really knows the genesis of the temple, legend has it that a devotee discovered a luminous ray of light coming from the Bhagirathi river bed, and upon investigating its source, came upon a piece of stone carved in the form of a human toe. He also found a Syayambhu Lingam [self evolved] of Nakuleshwar Bhairav nearby, and started worshipping Kali in the midst of a thick jungle.

This shrine grew to its present form over a period of time, thanks in particular to Sabarna Roy Chowdhury, a famous Brahmin Zamindar family of Barisa in the district of 24 Parganas. "There are several stories about the temple but no one really knows the truth," says President of Kalighat Temple Committee A K Mittra, also a leading advocate.

According to tradition, on June 22 every year, the Goddess is given Her annual bath. It is a highly private and sanctified event, privy to only a handful of people. The day coincides with the Snan Jatra [bathing ritual] at Jagannath Puri and Kamakhya, another important Shakti Peetha of Maa Kali. On this day the temple is closed to visitors.

Sacred rituals

There are five group of Haldars that have been traditionally taking care of the daily puja of Maa Kali. In all, there are about 840 members in the haldar families. Two-three senior members of these families get together to perform the rituals. The event begins at about 3.30 am - the time for the Brahma Muhurta and continues till 1.30 pm. The head priest Shanti Mohan recites the mantras and the haldars bathe the Goddess with the water from the Ganges, perfume, oil [Jabakusum] etc. They paint the body of the Mother with vermillion and dress Her in a Benarasi silk sari bought by members of the Kalighat Temple Committee [KTC]. Below the statue of the deity is a silver box in which the Goddess' toe is preserved. On that day it is opened and bathed. Nobody is allowed to see that.

[Food Offering for the Goddess]

On regular days, the morning puja begins between 4 am and 5 am. And the temple is open from 5 am onwards for public. Around 6.30 am the Goddess is offered fruits and sweets and the afternoon bhog comprises pulao, rice, fish, mutton, fruits and sweets. The food is cooked without tomatoes, onion and garlic in the three dedicated kitchens. Between 6 pm and 7 pm, She is offered traditional Bengali food such as luchi, bhaji, fried brinjals, potatoes and sandesh, and between 10.30 pm and 11 pm, She is given the last bhog of the day, sweets and milk.

Goat sacrifice is a common feature at the temple. "If devotees do not perform a sacrifice, the haldar has to offer a goat to the deity. The first sacrifice has to be given to Her. There's a legend that says that the Goddess visits the Dakhineshwar temple at night and returns to Kalighat in the morning.

Tuesdays and Saturdays are special days of the Goddess, where people in thousands throng the temple seeking special darshan. The special feature about Kalighat is that there are no tickets and entry is free to all. The temple administration is run in term of scheme passed by the Kolkata High Court, 1957, and thereafter modified by the Supreme Court in 1962-63. The district judge of 24 Paraganas South is the ex-officio chairman of the KTC but because of his judicial functions he has to nominate a senior member of the Bar as the President of KTC.

The temple is open between 5 am and 10.30 pm on weekdays and till 11 pm on Tuesday and Sunday. It is extended till 11.30 pm on Saturday.

How to get to the Temple:

By Air - Kolkata is well connected by air to all major countries in the world, as well as to Indian cities. The air carriers that have flights to and from the city include Aeroflot, Air France, Air India, Biman Bangladesh, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Gulf Air, Indian Airlines, Japan Airlines, Jet Airways, KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Royal Nepal Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways International.

By Rail - Trains are available from all parts of the country to Calcutta. Most inward bound trains stop at Howrah, which is also the station from which major trains to other cities depart. Most trains heading to areas such as New Jalpaiguri and other provinces in the north-east stop at the other station, Sealdah. Local trains to nearby towns are available from both stations, depending on which part of West Bengal you want to go to. Since Howrah and Sealdah are not exactly a hop, skip and jump away from each other, do remember to check which station you need you board your train from, when you buy your ticket!

By Road - A few buses ply from Orissa and Bihar to Calcutta. However, these are highly uncomfortable and best avoided. Buses are also available to nearby towns, especially if you wish to visit Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri on your trip to Calcutta. Depending on which direction you're heading in, buses could depart from the end of the Maidan near Chowringhee Road, or the bus stand at Babu Ghat near Fort William. A few tour operators have their own private bus stands.  So in case you plan to make this trip, do

Tantra Temples in India - The Kamakhya Temple in Assam, India

Location: Guwahati, Kamrup District, Assam
Built By: King Narakasur .  Re Built By: King Coochbihar Nar Narayan
Best time to Visit: Best to check with Kamrup District office, Assam

______________

The Kamakhya Temple in Assam is one of the most venerated Shakti shrines in India, and is regarded as one of the Shakti Peethams associated with the legend of Shiva and Daksha Yagna.

Kamakhya is located on a hill - Neelachala Parvat or Kamagiri near the city of Guwahati in Assam. Shakti, residing on theKamagiri hill is known as Kamakhya, the granter of desires. Assam traditionally has been known as the Kamarupa Desa and has been associated with Tantric practices and Shakti worship.

This temple was destroyed in early 16th century, and then rebuilt in the 17th century by King Nara Narayana, of Cooch Bihar. Images of the builder and related inscriptions are seen in the temple.

The Kalika Purana, an ancient work in Sanskrit describes Kamakhya as the yielder of all desires, the young bride of Shiva, and the giver of salvation.

Legend says that following the destruction of Daksha's Sacrifice and the Rudra Tandava of Shiva parts of Sati's body fell at several places throughout India, and these places are revered as Shakti peethas. The reproductive organ of Sati, [the Yoni] is said to have fallen here.

Legend

It is also said that the supreme creative power of Bhrahma was challenged by Shakti, the mother Goddess, and that Bhrahma could thereafter create, only with the blessings of the Yoni, as the sole creative principle. After much penance, Bhrahma brought down a luminous body of light from space and placed it within the Yoni circle, which was created by the Goddess and placed at Kamarupa.

The temple has a beehive like shikhara. Some of the sculptured panels seen here are of interest. There are images of Ganesha, Chamundeswari, dancing fitures etc.

Worship of a living woman as Goddess is of purely Tantric origin. It is stated that virgin worship is nothing but Shakti worship.
The virgin worship is performed along with Durga, Kali and other Mahavidyas. The salutation mantra of virgin worship is the same as vidya’s salutation mantra. Sometimes, it is also seen that the virgin is fed and clad and saluted without any mantra. The tantrics believe that the virgin is the Goddess incarnate.
“Her name is not Kamakhya but Kamakshi. People come here as their wishes are fulfilled."

There is no image of Shakti here. Within a corner of a cave in the temple, there is a sculptored image of the Yoni of the Goddess, which is the object of reverence. A natural spring keeps the stone moist.

Other temples on the Neelachala hill include those of Tara, Bhairavi, Bhuvaneswari and Ghantakarna.

Festivals

Durga Puja is celebrated annually during Navaratri in the month of September- October. It is a three day festival attracting several visitors. A unique festival observed here is the Ambuvaci [Ameti] fertility festival wherein it is believed that the Goddess [mother Earth] undergoes her menstrual period [similar to  Changannur Bhagawati in Kerala]. During this period the temple is closed for three days and opened with great festivity on the fourth day. It is believed to be inauspicious to till the ground or to plant seeds, during this three day period.

How to Reach the Temple:

By  Air: The nearest airport is Guwahati.
By Rail: The nearest railhead is situated at Guwahati.
By Road:  Guwahati is well connected with regular bus services from all the major cities in and around the state.

Tantra Temples in India

What is Tantra?
Tantra is a sacred Hindu word that relates to the idea that everyone and everything in the universe are connected. There is a cosmic energy that keeps us all together in the world. Tantra is a mystical and spiritual idea that is rather complicated to explain. It has to do with the cosmic energy of the universe and how we connect with it.

To have a Tantric experience is to connect with cosmic energy in order to accomplish something. This something can be anything that you want, whether it be a physical pleasure, inner peace, or an external goal. Tantra is an open door to a stimulating and spiritual path that we are guided on with the help of the energy around us.

On dictionary defines Tantra as "a form of yoga that teaches the attainment of ecstasy through esoteric, sometimes erotic, techniques." Yet another dictionary explains Tantra as "a Hindu or Buddhist mystical or ritual text dating from the 6th to 13th centuries... adherence to the doctrines or principles of the tantras, involving mantras, meditation, yoga and ritual."

Tantra is a spiritual experience. It is a mystical journey that helps you to find pleasure, fulfillment, and peace through meditation and connection with the universe around you. Explore the opportunities for yourself. WIth patience, you will discover what it is all about in time.

Tantra is a mode of worship that uses mantras, yantra, sadhanas and fire yajnas. This powerful combination can bring about dynamic changes in the individual and their situation. India is very famous for tantra, from centuries people were indulged in tantrik pujas and sadhanas. Many temples were built for this type of worship.

More about Shiva lingam stones:

The Lingam is one of the oldest religious symbols of civilization. It was recognized as far back as the ancient Indus valley civilization for its healing power. This power came to be associated with one of the three main Hindu deities, lord Shiva. Over thousands of years the Tantric Lingam has come to represent more than a physical or material form to be worshipped as an idol by the learned sages of the East and the West. To them the lingam represents a form of energy, which is within each of us. We are all made of part male and part female energy. Too much of one or the other is destructive, causing imbalance. Male and female energies must be unified if we are to find real peace of mind. Through the union of opposites the energies of creation are released and we can realize a state of higher consciousness.

A very rare, perfect, Narmadeshwar tantric temple lingam is shown below:

The great Rishis of ancient India introduced the Tantric philosophy to bring a more harmonious balance in the dualistic world to which we are born. The Tantric believes that all souls are unique emanations of God, just as God is everywhere and in everything. By concentrating our consciousness on an external object we can realize that God consciousness within [enlightenment]. The object should be as natural as a stone, round as the cycle of rebirth, and as smooth as the sea of meditation. Through the senses of sight, touch, and feeling one may calm the spirit and stop the internal dialogue for meditation. God is a state of consciousness, not a human form or statue.

The Tantric looks on the natural forms of nature to meditate. In the Tantric lingam he finds all his requirements. The Tantric Lingam is a naturally formed stone born of this earth. Within the lingam are two kinds of minerals fused together under great pressure, representing not only the duality of man and woman, but also a world of constant change, as no two lingams are alike. The vertical or phallic shape of the lingam represents the stream of man's expanding consciousness and evolution upward. The horizontal or red female lips of the lingam represent the contracting stream of female consciousness and evolution inward. The lingam is solid and heavier than most stones, representing the life of those who live according to their faith. These are but a few of the hidden meanings of the lingam or Cosmic Egg.

According to Tantric symbolism, the ideal form of the Tantric Lingam is concentric shaped, oval, smooth and gray colored with a red matrix. Not all lingams are Tantric. The true Tantric Lingam which the Hindus believe fell out of heaven from the gods, actually comes from the Narmada River in the central region of India. This place is known today as Onkar Mandhata, one of the seven holy pilgrimage sites of India.

The Tantric Lingam is a naturally tumbled and pre-shaped by the river. The process of finding the lingams and shaping them into the beautiful concentric marble-like finished stone is a long one. Once a year, during the dry season when the river is low, particularly on the full moon in February or Sivaratri, the lingams are ceremoniously gathered from the muddy banks of the Narmada River. However, it is not as easy as picking up pebbles on the beach. Each stone must be washed and inspected. Very few stones have the special red marking or spots that make the Tantric Lingam so unique. The lingams are not perfectly concentric and must be shaped and hand polished before they are acceptable for Temple use. This process takes hours of manual labor and special skills to get a perfectly concentric, oval, smooth lingam.

The Tantric Lingam is found only in this one place in India. It can be identified gemologically by its unique red spots. These spots do not run all the way through the stone like normal strata stone. In this case the mineral known as crypto crystalline quartz, or gemologically as chalcedony has an inclusion or a matrix of Iron Oxide and Geothite. This matrix crystallized after the formation of the Chalcedony. To the Tantric, this suggests a form of energy coming from inside the stone, i.e. creation. The body of the stone thus represents male energy [knowledge] and the red spots represent female energy [wisdom]. The very essence of creation is symbolized by the Tantric Lingam in that in the beginning there was one energy, call it God of anything you like. That energy lay dormant until a second energy was introduced. When that occurred all things in this universe were created, Bing Bang. The egg shape adds to the idea of the Cosmic Egg out of which the dualistic universe was hatched. Also the oval outline represents the continuous unending motion of the universe as it expands and contracts forever but never ends.

Traditionally, the lingam is stood upright with the matrix marking at the upper end, a third of the way from the top. Ideally this should be the only marking in a level horizontal plane. With this red matrix or female symbol are three distinct lines, the outer enclosing the marking in an unbroken continuous oval line, the inner separating the red iron Oxide from the yellow Geothite center, and a thin straight line or actual crack at the center physically representing the female energy coming out of the stone. Such a perfect Tantric Lingam with no other marking is very rare and valuable. Most Tantric Lingams have several markings, each of which represents the female energy coming out of the stone. This can also be interpreted as representation of the seven chakras depending on where the marking is found in relationship to the alignment of our own chakras. Each marking is very different and the Tantric Lingam reveals to each of us something different. For some it may be a calligraphic inscription, for others it may be an animal or bird.

A final mention should be made about one other very rarer powerful marking, the Brahman's cord. In India, the Brahmans are a priestly caste distinguished by the cotton cord they always wear over their shoulder or to their side. Some Tantric Lingams have such a cord as represented by a quartz inclusion running in a very thin line all the way around the lingam.

Today the lingam may be found in several forms and materials in the East. The most common is the Siva lingam set into a Yoni. The Yoni is carved out of the stone, usually the same material as the lingam and has the dual purpose as the female symbol [key hole shape] and as a through for the offerings, which are ritually poured over the lingam for puja or worship. There is a spout on one end which allows the liquids to drain into a receptacle. This form of lingam/Yoni may be found in most Saivite Temples. For the most part these lingams are not Tantric, but manmade from some local material and need to the Yoni to be Tantric. Only the Tantric Lingam is tantric in itself and does not need a Yoni to sit in, so the Yoni would serve only as a practical function for puja. One may find many of these type of manmade lingams with the four faces or emanations of Shiva carved on them.

In the West, the lingam has taken on several new powerful meanings and uses beyond the traditional Eastern ones. What really makes the stone magical is its crystalline form. Being made up of thousands of tiny quartz crystals, the Tantric Lingam has a powerful resonation or vibration similar to quartz crystals used in watches and electronic equipment. The Tantric Lingam resonates with your body chakra centers. It helps to realign and balance them. It also works as a very grounding and centering tool. Just like a crystal, the Tantric Lingam should be washed and cleared of all energy. This can be done by running water over it in a river or sink for at least 20 minutes. Once it is clear, you may hold it, putting your energy into it. The more you work with it the more powerful it will become and the more strength you will be able to pull from it when you need. If any other energy touches it all you have to do is wash it again holding on to it this time and your energy will be saved. This works particularly well with the small-sized lingam. This method may also be used to release stress by putting into the lingam and washing it away.

The importance of the lingam is not how old it is but where it was worshipped. To some it only has a material value as a form of natural art or antique. But to the Tantric, the lingam's true value is a mystic one as an object of power. For them the Tantric Lingam has a certain vibration. Through meditation one may become attuned to this vibration, using the lingam as a source of power. One must believe in the divine presence in all things. Then one must pick up an object, such as the lingam, with its smooth, round form that represent their feelings and beliefs, in a form of meditation. The energies one puts into the lingam will be stored and returned to them when they need it. The lingam is an object of power, the power which is dormant within each of us.

[Author: Tsajon von Lixfeld]

"In the beginning this reality was non-existent, it grew, it turned into an egg. The egg lay for the time of a year. The egg broke open. The two halves were one of silver, one of gold. The silver one became the earth, the golden one the sky, and the thick membrane, the mist, with the clouds, the small veins, the rivers and the fluid sea. And[(from it] all things arose and all things they desired."
Chandogya Upanishad

"He who worships the linga knowing it to be the 'First Cause', the source of consciousness, the substance to the Universe, is nearer to me [Shiva] than any other being."

Rajarajeswaram : A show by 1000 dancers at Thanjavur Big Temple

Millennium celebrations of the  Big Temple

1000 years passed, since the Big Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, was built. King Rajaraja of Chola empire, built this grand structure during his reign.  The Peruvudaiyar Kovil or Brihadeeswarar Temple (பெருவுடையார் கோவில்) also known as Rajarajeswaram at Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is the world's first complete granite temple and a brilliant example of the major heights achieved by Cholas kingdom Vishwakarmas in temple architecture.

It makes me compare similar grand sized architectural marvels in my country that were built even earlier [the Big Temple in Tanjore for example] which again makes me wonder at the sheer determination and effort of the workers of those times

The temple reflecting Tamil culture, ethos, and Tamil way of life has completed One Thousand years in the month of September,2010, with the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu  and the Tamilnadu Govt deciding to have a grand celebration of the event - a 1000 years of Raja Rajeswaram. Celebrations commenced on 22nd Sep, the Thanjavur town and the Temple wore a festive look. Many literary sessions and orations later, there was a grand sight on 25th evening - A confluence of a thousand folk artists from 75 troupes in Thanjavur  participated in this cultural event  held in the evenings from September 22 to 24 in venues on the Big Temple premises, Rajarajan Manimandapam, Tholkappiar Sathukkam, Old TNHB quarters and Karandhai.

In view of the millennium celebrations, the Big Temple was brightly illuminated while the entire city had been decked up for the extravaganza.

The legendary Padma Subramaniam led these 1000 artistes and arranged, managed the spectacular show. The dancers were from all parts of Tamilnadu and other Indian states, and many had come from foreign countries also ! Everyone of them came to Thanjavur  out of sheer dedication, love, and Bhakti "to perform in front of the God Brahadiswarar and Ambal Brahannayaki."

Chief Minister,  Mr. Karunanidhi presided over this great spectacle - with 1000 artistes in dance dress on a single stage[Medai]. They danced in unison for three songs, starting with ‘Ganapathy Kauthuvam,' followed it up with ‘Thirvisaipa songs of Karuvur Devar' and concluded with ‘Sivapanchaksharam, stotras of Adi Sankara.' It was a rare sight to see the hundreds of artists dancing around the Nandhi Mandapam with the 216-ft-tall Vimana of the Big Temple in the backdrop. The event was par Excellence and Magnificient  !!

On 26th Sep  the celebrations came to an end.  A postal stamp and a 5-rupee coin both depicting the magnificent edifice were released by the Chief Minister.   He also gave 1000 of these 5-rupee  coins to the dancers. The coins were in a golden-bag [Porkizhi, in Tamil] and Padma Subramaniam was unable to lift the bag ! If a single coin would weigh 9 grams, then the Porkizhi would have weighed 9 kg! On the whole--- a very remarkable celebration to be remembered for generations to come!!

Though the celebrations are for the completion of 1,000 years of the Big Temple, the real honour goes to Raja Raja Cholan, the greatest king of the famous Chola dynasty in the south. Also it has proved that lives of great men remind us that we can make our lives sublime. And those who are born artists, when departing leave their hand prints on the sands of time. Raja's personal life or victories might vanish but not his artistic outputs.
