Saptha Sthana Sthalams / Temples of Mylapore, Chennai - Virupakesheeswarar temple,Mylapore, Chennai, TN

Being one among the Saptha Sthana Temples in Mylapore, Virupakesheeswarar temple is one of the oldest temples in Mylapore. Legend has it that this temple  was built by a devotee named Sivanesan Chettiar. His daughter Poompavai died, and the great saint Thirugnana Sambandhar brought her back alive from her burnt body. This is a very ancient temple worth the visit.  

The main deities of Virupakesheeswarar temple are Virupakesheeswarar [Lord Shiva] and Vishalaxi Amman.  You may add this temple to your list of temples to be visited while in Mylapore.  Since the HRTS Railway is very close by, access to this temple is definitely made easier and approachable to the people who plan to visit Mylapore.

Also being one of the seven Saptha Sthana Temples, The idol faces south, with his consorts Sidhi and Budhi. Other deities worshipped here are Kasi Viswanathar, Ulagalandha Perumal, Vaishnavi, Lakshmi  and Saraswathi.


Worshipped by Sage Angeerasa, this temple is located at the South Mada street very close to the Kapaleeswarar temple. The legend has it that Asura Guru Sukracharyar worshipped Shiva here in order to regain his vision.


A Kumbhabhishekam, performed here once in 26 years, is a major ritual Brahmotsavam, a ten day festival, celebrated here during May/June draws a large number of people.


The temple is situated very near to HRTS station, Mylapore and is thus very accessable to visit Mylapore and the nearby temples.


This is an ancent and beautiful  temple worth visiting.  Being very close to Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple, one can defnitely plan to include this temple also while visiting Chennai and Mylapore.
